Last year, Washington Post changed its motto/slogan to DEMOCRACY DIES IN DARKNESS- meaning, without exhuming the ills of misgovernance, holding government accountable, exposing tyranny, impunity, cluelessness, rudderlessness of public officials (elected or appointed), Democracy Dies.
Just this morning, photos emerging from Ekiti State show the United States Consular General, Nigerian Mission, Distinguished Ambassador F. John Bray in a visit to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, South-West Nigeria.
It could be recalled that ahead of the July 14, 2018, Governorship election in Ekiti State, in sheer show of desperation to pay Fayose in his own coin for being a fierce critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Federal-controlled, Northern Police, led by IGP Ibrahim Idris, got an order from above, invading a peaceful Ekiti State with no fewer than 30,000 Policemen et al. This is a government that can’t provide the much needed security to the helpless people of North Central States, whom Rampaging and Murderous Fulani Herdsmen continue to slaughter on daily basis.
Two days ago, I wept when I saw a whole democratically-elected and legitimate Governor of a South-West State, beaten to the ground by Buhari‘s Police. These armed-to-the-teeth men and officers of the Police invaded the Ekiti State Government House shooting sporadically and firing tear gas canisters which hit Governor Fayose, among others.
I stand to be corrected. No Northern Governor would be treated with so much disdain like this in Nigeria by any President, not even a President from the South could try it. Nigeria would boil if that happens. Nigerians, think about this Bitter Fact.
Despite the provocations, lies from the pit of hell, frustrations of government policies meted against former President Goodluck Jonathan by key Northern Governors and politicians, none was beaten to sit on the ground like done to Governor Fayose last Wednesday.
Call him a drama king whichever way you like, but one thing remains that Fayose has been of a tremendous help to Nigeria’s nascent democracy under this Rudderless Buhari administration.
While Buhari and his co-travellers in the corridors of power, as well as his Herdsmen online supporters have become threat to Nigeria’s nascent democracy through their actions and inactions, people of goodwill like Governor Fayose remains committed to keeping Buhari‘s government on its toes. Who can beat that 2015-2019? NONE!
Nevertheless, I want to immensely thank Amb. Bray and the International Community for showing interest to monitor the Ekiti election.
I repeat, Democracy Dies in Darkness. We shall continue to speak truth to power, no matter whose ox is gored. As for the dyed-in-the-wool supporters of Buhari‘s impunity, continue.
In the last admnistration of President Jonathan, when you are critical of government and its policies, you are a Patriot. But when you do that now, you are labelled a HATER, WAILING WAILER, CORRUPT, CRIMINAL, WARDS OF CRIMINALS etc.
You are told that Corruption is Fighting Back when you criticize a government fed fat on public funds- our sweats. But how did we get here?
What anti-corruption war are we even talking about with the level of stealing ongoing since May 29, 2015? This Clueless government has not done any AUDITING of its account books- NNPC et al since 2015.
Let me ask some table-shaking questions:
- Who remembers the issue of Buhari‘s friend, Jafaru Issah?
- Who remembers the full report of the Arms Deal Probe 2007-2015?
- What probe has been done of the corruption allegations against Buhari‘s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari? Have we so soon forgotten the alleged MTN N500million Bribe Scandal among others?
- What of the many petitions written in 2015 calling for the probe of former Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), on how they ran their states?
What of the Maina-Gate? What of the Baru Maikanti-Gate? What of the Babachir Lawal-Gate? What of the Ikoyi-Gate? Who owns that money found at Kaduna Airport? Now, our own ‘supre-supre’ Kemi Adeosun is on the radar for alleged NYSC Exemption Letter scam. Like others before it, it would be swept under the carpet and DEODORISED (apologies to Shehu Sanni).
By and large, men and women of goodwill must continue to speak truth to power. One thing is certain, Power is Transient. Buhari can’t be President forever.
